The last question I ask myself when I’m evaluating sermons, including my own, is, Did I apply the text? This is an important question, though perhaps it’s often debated because people disagree on what constitutes application.

The third question I ask when evaluating my sermons is whether I preached Christ organically from the biblical text.

The last thing you want your congregation to do is to walk out of church, be filled with awe and wonder, but are ultimately unable to tell you why they are filled with these affections. The only way that people will mature in their faith and move from milk to solid meat is if they have a better understanding of the biblical text.

A fundamental question the preacher should always ask himself is, “Did I exegete the text?”

Pray that Christ would enable you to be faithful, even when you think no one is watching.

Sometimes you have to compare yourselves to others, but the most important benchmark is to ask whether you are being faithful to the tasks that the Lord has set before you.

I can’t tell you the number of times I have seen ministerial candidates standing for theological examination get asked a question, and rather than admit they don’t know, they give an intelligent-sounding but nonetheless ignorant response.

Even though a book might captivate your mind, be cautious regarding how much you allow it to influence your ministry. Take the time to evaluate, weigh, carefully consider, and determine to what degree the idea is correct and beneficial.
